The dawn of a new year goes hand in hand with New Year’s resolutions. It’s a time to set your sights on making next year your best year, and it’s filled with the possibility of what you can achieve if you only put your mind to it.

If your career or business goals are to launch a new business or gain more traction and visibility for your existing brand, then blogging may have been on your list for a while. And why wouldn’t it be? A core pillar of content marketing, 55% of businesses say they rely on blogging for inbound marketing.

You probably also know that SEO is contingent upon publishing fresh content on your site often, which blogging can help with. And that doesn’t change if you’re blogging for personal reasons either.

If you have something to say, then you need an audience to read it. Put simply, a well-crafted and engaging blog can deliver readers to you.

Why starting a blog is a good idea

Whether you’re a writer or a business owner, there’s a range of benefits of blogging. Here are just a handful:

Benefits of blogging for business

From SEO to customer engagement, here are six key benefits to businesses:

1. Provide useful content readers are looking for

Blogging isn’t just of benefit to you. People are always looking for new sources of information, and blog posts are the perfect way to deliver it. At their heart, blogs offer information, whether that be in the form of guides or news. By creating content that matches readers’ needs, you’ll be establishing an emotional connection with them.

2. Build your brand

For both new companies and those relaunching or trying to grow brand awareness, blogging is a subtle but effective way of raising your credibility. For one thing, blogging allows businesses to create a platform for themselves that is more personal than anything else. It allows them to develop and showcase their brand voice and promote the issues they care about. Make sure that the tone and style of your blog are consistent with your overall brand and the values you want to represent.

3. Create engagement

It follows that when you create relevant content, customers get an insight into who is behind the product or service being offered. This in turn increases customer engagement, which ultimately means every new blog post shared on social media has more chance of increasing traffic and cementing your brand in readers’ minds.

4. Have content to promote

It’s easy to be lost in the sea of social media churn, but having regular blog posts to promote can help punctuate your social media feed with useful articles. In turn, this can build up traction and deliver more audiences to you.

5. Grow your online presence

Many businesses find that having a blog on their website helps them to rank better in search results when peppering their articles with relevant terms that target audiences are searching for.

Optimising your blog posts with carefully placed keywords and links to other pages can help them appear higher up on SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages).

6. Showcase your thought leadership

One of the best ways to set your brand apart and bring in new customers is by offering something new. If you have expertise in a particular field or are able to contribute research or a unique perspective on your industry, then these make excellent blog topics that can quickly gain traction online and in the media.

From financial incentives to career development, blogging on an individual basis has a wealth of benefits:

1. Earn some extra cash

Bloggers from around the world have been reaping the financial perks of blogging for years in the form of advertising and influencer opportunities. You might think that it’s difficult to make money from blogging, and it’s true that stringing words together without an existing paying client doesn’t pay off straight away. But if you’re skilled at building an audience and you have a strong niche, then you can bring in traffic and use advertising and affiliate marketing to monetise your site.

2. Have a voice

Blogging is also a great way to express yourself. Not only will it help you improve your writing skills (which is a great transferable skill in any job and often a career in itself), but you’ll also be able to document your life and share your experiences with others. You never know, you might even make a few friends along the way.

3. Create your personal brand

Blogging is a great way to advertise your skillset and create a personal brand, which is essential if you’re looking to start a new career, build a name for yourself or bring in freelance clients.

4. Build a portfolio

A blog is a great way to showcase your writing skills, knowledge and expertise on a particular topic. If you’re looking to enjoy a career in digital marketing, advertising, branding, journalism or even as a fiction writer, a blog can be a great way to create and publicise your own work which could get picked up by those looking for new voices.

5. Establish a network

As your audience builds, you’ll create a network of followers. By and large, the blogging community is friendly and supportive. You can make some new friends by commenting on other bloggers’ posts and joining blogging communities.

6. Document your progress

Maybe you don’t want to blog for career reasons but to hold yourself accountable to a personal goal. Whether you want to lose weight or start a new hobby, you can publish posts about your journey and detail how you achieved key milestones to help others interested in the same thing.

How to start a blog for free

Now you know what you can gain from blogging, we’re going to show you how to start a blog for free:

1. Create an account

Starting a blog post is as easy as making an account on WordPress, Wix or any other platform. Most blogging platforms take you through all the steps to customise your site and be ready to start publishing. You might want to read this guide to some of the best platforms for new bloggers. Most platforms offer free hosting, or you can pay to enjoy your choice of domain name.

2. Choose a name and domain

Once you’ve chosen a platform, the next step is to come up with a name for your blog and choose a theme. This process can be fun but it’s also important to be strategic in how you go about it.

Your potential readers or customers will be building an opinion about your site before they even read the posts on it, so choose wisely. You also want to consider how easy it will be to find by people searching for content like yours in Google. Perhaps you want to include a keyword that is relevant to help give you a lift in the SERPs?

3. Choose a specialism

As mentioned, a blog should ideally have a niche subject area. For businesses, this will be around your core products, services, industry or values.

For personal bloggers, why not choose something that you’re passionate about? It’ll help to avoid writer’s block and bring in more traffic if your readers know what they can expect from you.

4. Make a content plan

Once you’ve chosen your topic, it’s time to start planning your content. This can be daunting if you’re not used to writing regularly. The most important part is to make sure that you’re publishing regularly and keeping your readers engaged.

5. Start writing

Now that you have a plan in place, it’s time to start writing! Be sure to start with an introduction that catches the reader’s attention and structure it so that it keeps readers’ attention throughout. Use headings to help organise your thoughts and try to use shorter paragraphs and a handful of images.

Don’t worry if your posts aren’t perfect at first – remember, practice makes perfect. Just make sure that you’re editing and proofreading them before hitting publish!

6. Optimise for SEO

Now comes the technical part: optimising your content for search engines. Try to structure each post around a specific long-tail keyword. Use it in the title, one subheading and the URL. Then include other relevant keywords naturally. It helps to produce longer-form content, around 800-1000 words, if you’re looking to optimise for SEO.

7. Promote your blog

Once you have a few blog posts published, it’s time to start promoting them. Schedule social media posts around your blog content and team them with eye-catching and relevant images and graphics.

What should I write about when starting a blog?

The good news is that there are plenty of blog topics out there for any industry or niche. What’s important is to make sure that the content shared within each new post has a purpose behind it and offers something unique that only you can bring.

For one thing, writing about topics and themes that you are passionate about gives the reader an insight into who you are as a person or company. You are more likely to write engaging content if it genuinely represents yourself or your business.

When people feel like they know the author behind the blog post, they’re more likely to continue following their work. And when people feel engaged with your content, then every new post that goes up stands a better chance of being read and shared on social media platforms, which will increase traffic even more.

If you’re a business, then sharing your unique perspective of industry-related topics, trends and news stories can give your content the edge over the competition.

Also, don’t be afraid to say something that hasn’t been said before. This can help position you in front of an untapped market and quickly establish yourself as a spokesperson for that field or market which can bring lots of PR opportunities.

Tips for starting a blog in 2022

Blog calendar goals - Why starting a blog is a good idea - Copify blog

By following a few tips, you can make the most of your blogging New Year’s resolution:

1. Have a goal: Is your goal for blogging to: Raise your brand awareness amongst key demographics? Increase traffic to your website? Increase engagement and shares on social media? Promote a certain product or service? Knowing your goal will make it easier to plan your strategy. Check in with your goals every few months to see if you’re on track.

2. Keep a regular cadence: It’s easy for your New Year’s resolution to fall victim to lack of planning. Setting up a schedule to blog consistently at a regular pace (ideally weekly, if you can) will help you stay motivated and mean audiences (and Google bots) keep checking back for fresh content. Review your schedule monthly to make sure you’re still on track or readjust your plan if needed.

3. Look for inspiration: There is blog inspiration everywhere. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for stories, insights, facts, trends or anecdotes that might make useful entryways for blog content. Keep a notebook or spreadsheet with ideas to follow up on, or set up Google alerts for trending stories in your niche.

4. Go for longer-form content – but don’t sacrifice quality: Blog posts with around 1000 words or more tend to rank higher on search engines such as Google and Bing. However, always ensure your content provides quality and depth of research. If you can’t write 1000 words of insightful content, then it’s better to produce a shorter post.

5. Don’t succumb to fear of failure: When starting out, it’s easy to be overwhelmed. Remember you don’t need to have all the answers – you just need to take it one post at a time and try to commit to a regular publishing day each week. Finally, be open to receiving feedback, whether it be negative or positive, and to giving it a shot!

Make a commitment to your brand today and just think where you’ll be this time next year.
